2014 Astek Grant Recipient: Conscious Capitalism Chicago
Every year Astek awards one non-profit organization with a grant that covers the cost of a project designed to improve their online presence and advance a mission. This can be anything from a new website to an integrated Foursquare campaign to build local notoriety. In all cases, it’s great fun for the staff to support worthy organizations and get chummy with a passionate staff. As many of the employees at Astek come from strong arts or community backgrounds, the annual Astek grant program is a natural fit for our company culture.
The 2014 Astek Grant Recipient:
Our 2014 grant recipient is the Chicago Chapter of Conscious Capitalism. They are a relatively new chapter – founded by Thea Polancic, Lee Capps, Brian Fippinger and Chris Johnson – and are quickly becoming a popular leadership community in which to share, explore and learn while leading conscious, sustainable businesses.

About Conscious Capitalism:
Conscious Capitalism builds on the foundations of Capitalism:
- Voluntary Exchange
- Freedom to Trade
- Rule of Law
Conscious Capitalism has four pillars guiding and underlying a business that practices Conscious Capitalism:
Higher Purpose: Recognizing that every business has a purpose that includes, but is more than, making money. By focusing on its Higher Purpose, a business inspires, engages and energizes its stakeholders.
Stakeholder Orientation: Recognizing interdependent nature of life and the human foundations and business, a business needs to create value with and for its various stakeholders (customers, employees, vendors, investors, communities, etc.). Like the life forms in an ecosystem, healthy stakeholders lead to a healthy business system.
Conscious Leadership: Human social organizations are created and guided by leaders – people who see a path and inspire others to travel along the path. Conscious Leaders understand and embrace the Higher Purpose of business and focus on creating value for and harmonizing the interests of the business stakeholders. They recognize the integral role of culture and purposefully cultivate Conscious Culture.
Conscious Culture: This is the ethos – the values, principles, practices – underlying the social fabric of a business, which permeates the atmosphere of a business and connects the stakeholders to each other and to the purpose, people and processes that comprise the company.
The 2014 Astek Grant:
- Responsive website
- WordPress CMS
- Content strategy and discovery
- Editorial calendar
Astek will be providing the Chicago Chapter of Conscious Capitalism with their first website. It will, among other things, showcase a strong community of leaders engaged in the effort and the growing number of chapter events. Ultimately, the goal is to facilitate an engaging conversation that helps people understand the value of Conscious Capitalism.
Theirs is an important story to be told, and we’re thrilled to help build place to do that. In addition, the Astek marketing team will provide a framework for content creation that utilizes the many experienced authors who write about running a conscious business. This editorial calendar will take advantage of existing resources and prioritize attention to content that best creates organizational awareness and engagement with the chapter. As the focus on sustainable and purposeful business grows, Astek will guide the chapter into the right technologies and marketing strategies that makes responding to the community easier and more effective.
