The absolute #1 tool I rely on as a web developer, Firebug changed the way I work. Allows you to quickly and easily examine the CSS styles of any item on a web page, trace javascript code, tweak settings to see how they look without having to actually update the HTML document.
For Firefox, though there is a Firebug Lite that provides some of the same functionality for other browsers.
