Take a Phone Break!

ETIQUETTE RANT:

I was out to dinner a few nights ago, and when my date was in the bathroom I took a peek around the restaurant.  I was shocked at the number of my fellow diners who were on their smart phones during dinner.

During dinner WITH OTHER PEOPLE.

If they weren’t answering text messages they were making calls or surfing Facebook.

WHAT?

Yes, as they sat next to their friends or significant others, they chose to interact with their smart phones over their companions.

As far as I’m concerned, there are only three reasons you need to pick up your phone over dinner:

  1. Illness or emergency* of a friend or family member
  2. If you have a business emergency*
  3. If you have kids at home and it’s the babysitter

*The dictionary defines “emergency” as a serious, unexpected, and often dangerous situation requiring immediate action. Keep that in mind next time you think you might have one.

So, if you are in the company of others put that phone down. Whatever it is can probably wait. The most interesting conversations and experiences you will have in your life will be in-person, not via text.

  • Good point! I admit sometimes I pull out my phone at dinner and then quickly think better of it. We’re being pulled away from real human interaction in favor of staring at a phone. I really hope it’s a passing fad.
